Tooth Extractions (Routine / Impacted / Wisdom Teeth)

Tooth extraction is a procedure performed when a tooth can no longer remain in the mouth in a healthy or functional way. Tooth extraction is usually necessary due to severe decay, gum disease, excessive growth, or lack of space. Extractions vary depending on the type of tooth, such as routine teeth, impacted teeth, or wisdom teeth.

Routine Tooth Extraction:
Routine tooth extraction is performed for teeth that are easily visible and accessible. These teeth are usually extracted when they are decayed, infected, or severely damaged. The dentist loosens the tooth and removes it. The healing process after extraction is generally quick, and mild pain may occur.

Impacted Tooth Extraction:
An impacted tooth is a tooth that remains trapped under the gum and has not erupted into the mouth. These teeth are most commonly wisdom teeth and may need to be extracted due to lack of space, risk of infection, or improper positioning. Extraction of an impacted tooth requires a surgical procedure. The dentist opens the gum to remove the tooth and may sometimes divide the tooth into sections. These procedures are usually performed under local anesthesia, and the healing process may take slightly longer.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction:
Wisdom teeth usually erupt during young adulthood. If there is not enough space in the mouth or if they erupt in an incorrect position, they can cause pain and inflammation. Wisdom tooth extraction often requires a surgical procedure because the tooth is frequently impacted. During this procedure, the gums are opened and the tooth may be removed in sections. Swelling and pain after wisdom tooth extraction are normal, but proper care helps speed up recovery.

Healing After Tooth Extraction:
After tooth extraction, it is very important to follow the dentist’s instructions. Consuming soft foods, avoiding smoking, and regularly rinsing the mouth with salt water help accelerate the healing process. Pain relievers may also be used to reduce discomfort.

When performed at the right time and by a professional, tooth extraction is generally a smooth procedure. However, as with any condition, regular dental check-ups allow potential issues to be detected and treated at an early stage.
