Gum Diseases and Treatment
Gum diseases are health conditions caused by inflammation of the gums. They commonly present with symptoms such as redness, swelling, bleeding, and sensitivity. If left untreated, gum diseases can lead to more serious health problems, which is why early diagnosis and treatment are very important.
Gum diseases usually begin due to the accumulation of plaque and tartar on the teeth. Plaque forms when bacteria in the mouth combine and adhere to the tooth surface. These deposits irritate the gums and can cause gum inflammation (gingivitis). Gingivitis leads to redness, swelling, and bleeding of the gums, but it is reversible with proper treatment. If the condition progresses, the gums may begin to recede and the bone tissue supporting the teeth can be damaged, leading to periodontitis.
Treatment of gum diseases varies depending on the stage of the condition. Gingivitis can generally be treated with professional cleaning and good oral hygiene. Your dentist will perform scaling to remove tartar and help restore gum health. Proper brushing techniques, flossing, and the use of appropriate oral care products may also be recommended.
Periodontitis treatment is more comprehensive. At this stage, infected tissues beneath the gums may need to be cleaned. The dentist gently treats the gum tissues to allow them to reattach to the teeth in a healthy manner. This procedure is known as scaling and root planing. In advanced cases of periodontitis, surgical intervention may be required. These procedures may involve reshaping the gums or thoroughly cleaning the tooth roots.
The most effective way to prevent gum diseases is regular oral care and routine dental check-ups. Brushing your teeth twice a day, using dental floss, and rinsing with mouthwash help prevent gum disease. Avoiding risk factors such as smoking and maintaining a healthy diet also contribute positively to gum health.
Gum diseases can be completely treated when diagnosed early. However, if left untreated, they may lead to tooth loss and other health problems. Therefore, do not neglect your gum health and make sure to attend regular dental check-ups.
