Apical Resection
Apical resection is a surgical procedure performed to treat infections or cysts that develop at the tip of a tooth root. It is usually preferred when an infection at the root apex cannot be completely resolved with root canal treatment alone. In this procedure, the infected root tip and the surrounding tissues are surgically removed while preserving the remaining part of the tooth. Apical resection is a tooth-saving treatment option used especially in cases where root canal therapy is insufficient.
Why Is Apical Resection Necessary?
Inflammation that develops at the tip of a tooth root is usually treated with root canal therapy. However, in some cases, the infection may persist even after root canal treatment. Such persistent infections can damage the bone surrounding the tooth root and may lead to more serious problems in the long term. Apical resection becomes necessary to eliminate these chronic infections and preserve the tooth.
How Is Apical Resection Performed?
Apical resection is performed under local anesthesia. Your dentist surgically removes the infected part of the tooth root and the surrounding tissue. At the same time, the infected tissue at the root tip is cleaned, and the root end is sealed to complete the procedure. This treatment is generally applied as a last resort to prevent the extraction of a tooth.
The healing process is usually completed within a few days after the procedure. Mild swelling and pain may occur, but these conditions can generally be controlled with prescribed medications.
Advantages of Apical Resection
This surgical intervention allows the tooth to be saved by treating the problematic root tip without extracting the tooth. Choosing apical resection instead of tooth extraction offers both functional and aesthetic advantages. By preventing tooth loss, it contributes to preserving the natural tooth structure. In this way, chewing function continues without disruption, and long-term problems such as the shifting of other teeth are prevented.
